1980s Santa Clara Jar

1980s hand-coiled and traditionally fired Santa Clara blackware jar by Barbara Martinez, signed “Barbara A,” featuring a compact, rounded form with soft vertical lobing that gives the piece a sculptural presence. The surface is hand-polished to a deep black finish. The clean form and restrained design emphasize the quality of the polish and the symmetry of the shaping. Barbara Martinez is the mother of noted Santa Clara potter Vickie Martinez, placing this work within a recognized family lineage of Pueblo pottery.
