Great Horned Owl Kachina

Great Horned Owl Kachina, or Mongwa, by Hopi carver Arvin Saufkie, signed on the base. Mongwa is associated with discipline, protection, and the enforcement of proper behavior within Hopi tradition. The figure is carved in an active stance holding yucca stalks, with a detailed feathered owl mask, painted clothing, and a natural wood base. The doll is a one-piece carving, traditionally carved from a single piece of cottonwood root.
