The variegated black background is made with hand-carded, hand-spun wool that was hand-dyed with black walnut shell wool. This yarn was spun and dyed by Luana’s mother.

This sandpainting design represents the balance and harmony between the earth below and the sky above, reflecting the interconnectedness of all living things. It symbolizes the Navajo belief in Hózhó, a state of beauty, balance, and order achieved through respect for both the natural world and spiritual forces.
